Ginger Gold (horse)

Ginger Gold was an American Thoroughbred racehorse foaled in 1917. She was bred and owned by Walter J. Salmon, Sr. and trained by Thomas J. Healey. A chestnut filly, Ginger Gold is best known for winning the 1920 Kentucky Derby.

Her dam was the mare Lady Sterling, and her sire was Star Shoot. Ginger Gold was not nominated for the Futurity Stakes as a two-year-old due to a clerical error.

As a three-year-old, Ginger Gold was ridden to victory in the Kentucky Derby by jockey James "Jimmy" Winkfield. Although Winkfield was a celebrated jockey, his victory aboard Ginger Gold came late in his career. She won the Derby in a time of 2:04 2/5.

After winning the Kentucky Derby, Ginger Gold did not achieve any other major victories and was subsequently retired from racing. Her impact on the sport, however, is cemented through her Derby win. Her owner, Walter Salmon, had also won the Kentucky Derby previously in 1907 with Pink Star.
