Gharjamai

Gharjamai (also spelled Gharjamai) is a Bengali term used to describe a son-in-law who resides permanently at his in-laws' house. The word literally translates to "house-son-in-law." This practice is typically observed when the family of the daughter does not have any sons to inherit and manage their property and assets, or when they need support due to old age or infirmity.

The gharjamai effectively becomes part of his wife's family and often takes on responsibilities traditionally held by a son. The arrangement can involve a formal agreement or simply be a mutually understood and accepted social norm. While the gharjamai may inherit property or assets, it is generally understood that his primary responsibility is to care for his wife's parents.

Historically, the gharjamai system provided a solution for families without male heirs to preserve their lineage and ensure their well-being in their later years. The social status and acceptance of a gharjamai can vary depending on factors such as his economic background, personality, and how well he integrates into his wife's family and community.

While still practiced in some rural areas, the gharjamai tradition is becoming less common in modern Bengali society, particularly in urban areas, due to increased social mobility, changing family structures, and greater economic independence for women.
