George Warren (missionary)

George Warren (1807-1889) was an American Protestant missionary associated with the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM). He served primarily in the Madras Presidency of British India, focusing his efforts on evangelism, education, and translation.

Warren was born in Hardwick, Massachusetts. He graduated from Amherst College in 1832 and Andover Theological Seminary in 1835. Shortly after, he was ordained as a minister and appointed as a missionary to India by the ABCFM.

He arrived in Madras (now Chennai) in 1836 and was stationed at Madura (now Madurai), where he worked among the Tamil-speaking population. He dedicated his life to learning the Tamil language and culture, enabling him to effectively communicate the Christian message and translate religious texts. Warren played a significant role in establishing and supporting various educational institutions, including schools and seminaries, aimed at training local leaders and promoting literacy. He also contributed to the translation of the Bible into Tamil, making it accessible to a wider audience.

Warren's work extended beyond Madurai, as he traveled extensively throughout the region, preaching and establishing new mission stations. He faced challenges related to cultural differences, religious resistance, and the colonial context. However, he remained committed to his mission, working tirelessly for the betterment of the local communities.

He served in India for over 50 years, witnessing significant social and religious changes. George Warren died in Madurai in 1889, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication to the cause of Christian missions in South India. His contributions to education, translation, and evangelism had a lasting impact on the region's Christian community.
