Gao Xu

Gao Xu (高煦), also known as Prince of Han (漢王), was a prince of the Ming Dynasty. He was the second son of the Yongle Emperor and Empress Xu. Gao Xu was a significant figure during his father's reign, known for his military prowess and ambition. He played a key role in several military campaigns during the Yongle Emperor's northern expeditions against the Mongol remnants.

However, Gao Xu harbored ambitions for the throne and openly displayed disrespect towards his elder brother, the Hongxi Emperor, after the Yongle Emperor's death. This eventually led to a rebellion during the reign of the Xuande Emperor (Gao Xu's nephew). The rebellion was swiftly suppressed, and Gao Xu was captured. He was stripped of his title and imprisoned. He later died in captivity, reportedly killed by the Xuande Emperor himself.

Gao Xu's life and actions serve as a cautionary tale in Ming Dynasty history, illustrating the dangers of unchecked ambition and the consequences of challenging imperial authority. He is remembered both for his military contributions and for his ultimately unsuccessful and tragic quest for power. His story is frequently referenced in historical dramas and literature dealing with the Ming Dynasty.
