Ganda (caste)

The Ganda are a Scheduled Caste found primarily in the state of Odisha, India. They are also present in significant numbers in neighboring states such as Chhattisgarh. Traditionally, the Ganda community has been associated with weaving, particularly of coarse cotton cloth, and agricultural labor.

Historically, the Ganda occupied a low position in the traditional social hierarchy of Odisha. They have faced social discrimination and economic hardship. The classification as a Scheduled Caste entitles them to certain affirmative action benefits and reserved seats in education, government employment, and political representation, aimed at improving their socio-economic status.

The Ganda community has its own distinct cultural practices and traditions, which vary across different regions. They often speak Odia or regional dialects. Efforts are ongoing to promote education and literacy within the community and to address issues of social injustice and inequality.
