Gadheim
Gadheim was a village in the Lower Franconia region of Bavaria, Germany, that was considered to be the geographical center of the European Union from 2013 until the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the EU on January 31, 2020.
Following the accession of Croatia to the EU in 2013, calculations showed that the geographical center of the EU had shifted from Westerngrund, also in Bavaria, to Gadheim. The exact point was located in a field near the village.
The designation brought a brief period of increased attention and tourism to Gadheim. Local officials erected a sign and flag to mark the location.
With the UK's exit from the EU, the geographical center shifted once again, moving to a location in Westerlo, Belgium. The marker in Gadheim was removed, signifying the change. Despite its brief tenure as the EU's center, Gadheim remains an example of how political and geographical landscapes are intertwined.
