G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (IDW Publishing)
G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (IDW Publishing) refers to multiple comic book series published by IDW Publishing based on the G.I. Joe franchise originally created by Hasbro. IDW acquired the license to publish G.I. Joe comics in 2008. Unlike earlier iterations, IDW's G.I. Joe universe was initially interconnected with other Hasbro properties, most notably Transformers and later Micronauts, ROM, and others, forming what was dubbed the "Hasbroverse."
The core G.I. Joe series, simply titled "G.I. Joe," ran for over 50 issues and presented a modern military take on the classic conflict between G.I. Joe and Cobra. This series was written primarily by Chuck Dixon.
IDW also published several spin-off series and mini-series that focused on individual characters, specific missions, or explored different aspects of the G.I. Joe mythology. Examples include "G.I. Joe: Cobra," which explored the inner workings of Cobra, and "G.I. Joe: Origins," which detailed the formation of the G.I. Joe team.
After the conclusion of the initial G.I. Joe series, IDW relaunched the title under various banners, including "G.I. Joe: Cobra Files," "G.I. Joe: Special Missions," and others, each offering a different perspective or focus within the G.I. Joe universe.
The Hasbroverse concept was eventually phased out, and IDW later launched a new G.I. Joe series under the creative direction of Larry Hama, the writer of the original Marvel Comics G.I. Joe series, effectively returning to the continuity of that earlier run. This series aimed to continue the story where the Marvel Comics series left off.
IDW's G.I. Joe comics are known for their modern military aesthetic, complex characters, and exploration of the geopolitical implications of the G.I. Joe/Cobra conflict. The various series have been collected in trade paperbacks and hardcover volumes.
