Günter Siebert (footballer)

Günter Siebert (born 27 October 1930 in Herne, Germany; died 16 January 2017) was a German football player and coach. He played primarily as a forward.

Playing Career:

Siebert began his career at Westfalia Herne, where he played from 1950 to 1963. He was a key player in their successful period in the Oberliga West, one of the five top-level leagues in West Germany at the time. He was known for his goal-scoring ability and was instrumental in Westfalia Herne winning the German championship in 1959. He scored 16 goals in the 1958/59 Oberliga West season, helping Herne to qualify for the championship playoffs.

Following his time at Westfalia Herne, Siebert played for Schwarz-Weiß Essen from 1963 to 1965.

Managerial Career:

After retiring as a player, Siebert transitioned into coaching. He managed several clubs, including Rot-Weiß Oberhausen, Arminia Bielefeld (where he won promotion to the Bundesliga), Fortuna Düsseldorf, and SV Werder Bremen. He was known for his tactical approach and ability to motivate his players. His tenure at Werder Bremen was particularly notable, though ultimately unsuccessful in achieving major trophies. He later coached other clubs, continuing his career in the lower leagues.
