Peeter Olesk (politician)

Peeter Olesk (born September 1, 1953, in Põltsamaa, Estonia, died December 20, 2021, in Tartu, Estonia) was an Estonian politician, historian, and philologist. He was a prominent figure in the restoration of Estonian independence and served in several key government positions during the early years of the newly independent nation.

Olesk graduated from the University of Tartu with degrees in history and philology. He was a member of the Estonian National Independence Party (ERSP) and later joined the Isamaaliit party (Pro Patria Union), which later merged into the Isamaa ja Res Publica Liit (IRL, Pro Patria and Res Publica Union).

Olesk served as the Minister of Culture and Education from 1992 to 1995 in the government of Prime Minister Mart Laar. During his tenure, he oversaw significant reforms in the education system and cultural policy, including the development of Estonian-language textbooks and the strengthening of national identity. He also served as the Minister of Population Affairs in 1995.

Beyond politics, Olesk was a respected scholar and author. He published numerous articles and books on Estonian history and culture. He was also a noted public intellectual, contributing to debates on various social and political issues.

Following his active political career, Olesk remained involved in public life through his scholarly work and participation in various civic organizations. He held positions at the University of Tartu, where he continued to research and lecture. His contributions to Estonian political life, culture, and education were widely recognized.
