Franz Keller (psychologist)

Franz Keller (born December 27, 1913, in Beuron, Germany; died March 4, 1991, in Freiburg im Breisgau) was a German Roman Catholic priest, psychologist, and author. He is best known for his work in pastoral psychology and his popular books on self-help and relationships, written from a Christian perspective.

Keller studied philosophy and theology before being ordained as a priest in 1939. After serving as a chaplain, he obtained a doctorate in psychology in 1952 from the University of Tübingen.

His work focused on applying psychological principles to pastoral care and counseling. Keller aimed to bridge the gap between faith and psychology, believing that psychological insights could deepen religious understanding and promote personal well-being. He wrote extensively on topics such as self-esteem, communication, and overcoming personal challenges. His books were widely read in German-speaking countries and translated into multiple languages.

Some of his notable works include Seelsorge als Gespräch ("Pastoral Care as Conversation"), Erziehung zur Freiheit ("Education for Freedom"), and Lebensregeln ("Rules for Living"). His writing style was characterized by its accessibility and practical advice, making complex psychological concepts understandable to a broad audience. He was a proponent of active listening and empathy in interpersonal relationships.
