Fables (comics)
Fables is an Eisner Award-winning comic book series created by writer Bill Willingham, with art primarily by Mark Buckingham and Lan Medina. Published by Vertigo Comics (an imprint of DC Comics) from 2002 to 2015, the series presents a world where fairy tale characters, collectively known as "Fables," have been forced to flee their homelands due to a mysterious adversary known as the Adversary.
The Fables have established a secret community in modern-day New York City, known as Fabletown. The more human-looking Fables live in Fabletown, while non-human Fables are relegated to "The Farm" in upstate New York. The series explores themes of community, prejudice, survival, identity, and the struggle to maintain hope in the face of adversity.
The main character is often considered to be Sheriff Bigby Wolf (the Big Bad Wolf), who acts as law enforcement and protector of the Fable community. Other prominent characters include Snow White, the Deputy Mayor; Prince Charming, a notorious womanizer; and Rose Red, Snow White's sister.
The narrative arc of Fables is complex and multi-layered, spanning centuries of history and exploring the individual stories of a vast ensemble cast. The series is notable for its mature themes, clever reinterpretations of classic fairy tales, and its exploration of the consequences of living in exile. The defeat of the Adversary, a major plot point, occurs relatively early in the series, allowing the narrative to then explore the aftermath and the challenges of rebuilding and governing in a new world.
Fables spawned several spin-off titles, including Jack of Fables, Fairest, and Everafter: From the Pages of Fables. The series has also been adapted into a video game series, The Wolf Among Us, developed by Telltale Games.
