Epiphloea (alga)
Epiphloea is a genus of filamentous green algae belonging to the family Trentepohliaceae. These algae are characterized by their epiphytic lifestyle, meaning they grow on the surface of other plants, particularly the bark of trees and leaves. The filaments are typically branched and can form dense, felt-like mats. Epiphloea algae contribute to the often colorful (orange, red, or greenish) appearance of tree trunks and branches in humid environments. They are generally considered to be aerial algae, although they require some degree of moisture to thrive. Their pigmentation is often due to the presence of carotenoids, which protect the chlorophyll from intense sunlight. The taxonomic classification of Epiphloea can be complex, and identification often relies on microscopic examination of cellular structures and reproductive characteristics.
