Eighth Wonder (band)
Eighth Wonder was a British pop band formed in 1983, best known for the singles "Stay With Me" and "Cross My Heart." The band was fronted by singer Patsy Kensit.
History
The band's initial lineup consisted of Patsy Kensit, her brother Jamie Kensit, Geoff Beauchamp, and Richard Fairbrass. Early recordings were primarily in a jazz-funk style. Fairbrass later left to form Right Said Fred.
Their early work garnered attention in Italy, and they signed to a major label. Eighth Wonder achieved some initial success with singles like "Stay With Me" in 1985, which reached the UK Singles Chart. However, it was their later pop-oriented material, produced by Pet Shop Boys collaborators, that brought them wider recognition.
In 1988, Eighth Wonder released their debut album, Fearless. The album featured the singles "Cross My Heart," which became their biggest hit, reaching the top 10 in several European countries, and "I'm Not Scared," written and produced by the Pet Shop Boys. "I'm Not Scared" was later recorded by the Pet Shop Boys themselves, becoming a hit in its own right.
After the success of Fearless, the band attempted to record a follow-up album, but it was never released. Personal tensions and disagreements over musical direction contributed to the group's eventual disbandment in 1989.
