Doo Dad
A doo dad (also spelled do dad, doodad, or do-dad) is a nonspecific term used to refer to an object whose actual name is either unknown or forgotten, or whose specific name is considered unimportant in the context. It is a placeholder noun, similar in function to "thingamajig," "whatchamacallit," or "gizmo."
The term generally applies to small, often mechanical, objects. It can also be used more broadly to refer to any item of equipment or gadgetry, especially one of questionable necessity or usefulness. The exact connotations can vary depending on context and speaker; sometimes, a "doo dad" might imply ingenuity, while other times it might suggest triviality or superfluousness.
The origin of the term is uncertain, but it is believed to have entered common usage in the early 20th century. It is considered an informal term and is generally avoided in formal writing or technical documentation. While grammatically a noun, it can sometimes be used adjectivally to describe something perceived as unnecessary ornamentation or excess.
