Donald Hunt (musician)
Donald Hunt (born November 20, 1930, died January 13, 2018) was a British choral conductor, organist, and composer. He was particularly known for his long tenure as Organist and Master of the Choristers at Leeds Parish Church (later Leeds Minster) from 1957 to 1995.
Hunt studied at the Royal College of Music, where he was a pupil of Herbert Howells and Harold Darke. His career began as Organist and Choirmaster at St. Oswald's Church, Guiseley, followed by a position at St. John's Church, Upper Norwood.
At Leeds Parish Church, Hunt developed a renowned choir, commissioning new works and expanding the repertoire to include a wider range of music. He directed numerous recordings and broadcasts, establishing the choir's reputation nationally and internationally. He was known for his meticulous preparation and inspiring leadership.
Hunt was also active as a composer, writing anthems, hymn tunes, and other choral works. Many of his compositions are still performed in cathedrals and churches throughout the United Kingdom and beyond. He served as an examiner for the Royal School of Church Music and was a visiting professor at the University of Leeds.
After his retirement from Leeds Parish Church, Hunt continued to be involved in music, giving recitals and teaching. He received honorary doctorates from the University of Leeds and the University of York in recognition of his significant contributions to church music.
