Derrick Johnson (footballer)
Derrick Lamar Johnson (born November 22, 1982) is a former American football linebacker who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 13 seasons, all with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Early Life and College Career:
Johnson was born in Waco, Texas. He attended Waco High School, where he was a standout linebacker. He then played college football at the University of Texas, where he was a two-time All-American and won the Dick Butkus Award in 2004 as the nation's top linebacker.
Professional Career:
Johnson was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round (15th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft. He quickly established himself as a key member of the Chiefs' defense, known for his speed, tackling ability, and leadership. He was named to four Pro Bowls (2011, 2012, 2013, 2015) and was a two-time second-team All-Pro (2009, 2011).
Throughout his career with the Chiefs, Johnson amassed numerous tackles and other defensive statistics. He was a team captain for several seasons and was highly respected by his teammates and coaches. He holds the Chiefs' franchise record for career tackles.
Johnson's career was unfortunately marked by some significant injuries, including a torn Achilles tendon suffered in both 2014 and 2016. Despite these setbacks, he persevered and continued to contribute to the Chiefs' success.
He was released by the Chiefs in 2018. He signed a one-day contract with the Chiefs on May 3, 2019, to retire as a member of the team.
Legacy:
Derrick Johnson is considered one of the greatest linebackers in Kansas City Chiefs history. His longevity, leadership, and consistent performance made him a fan favorite and a valuable asset to the team for over a decade. His jersey number, 56, has not been issued by the Chiefs since his departure, although it has not been officially retired.
