Cyril Vasiľ
Cyril Vasiľ (born April 10, 1965) is a Slovak prelate of the Catholic Church, specifically of the Slovak Greek Catholic Church. He served as the Archbishop Secretary of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches from 2009 to 2021.
Ordained to the priesthood in 1987, Vasiľ entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1990. He earned a doctorate in Eastern Canon Law from the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome. He taught canon law at the Pontifical Oriental Institute and served as its rector from 2007 to 2009.
In 2009, he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Ptolemais in Libya and Secretary of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches by Pope Benedict XVI. As Secretary, he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Congregation, which oversees the Eastern Catholic Churches in full communion with Rome.
In January 2021, he was appointed eparch of Košice, Slovakia, and was installed in March of the same year. In December 2023, Pope Francis accepted Vasiľ's resignation as eparch of Košice, following a period of controversy and division within the eparchy.
