Craig Luebben

Craig Luebben (born June 18, 1961, died July 18, 2009) was an American mountaineer, author, and guide, known for his expertise in ice climbing and mixed climbing. He was a prolific first ascentionist, particularly in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. Luebben was a certified American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) guide and instructed aspiring climbers and guides in various disciplines.

Luebben authored several highly regarded instructional books on climbing techniques, including "Climbing Ice" (1993, 2000) and "How to Ice Climb!" (1998). These books are considered essential resources for climbers learning and improving their skills in ice and mixed terrain. His writing style was known for being clear, concise, and practical.

Beyond his climbing and writing accomplishments, Luebben was also a respected member of the climbing community, known for his commitment to safety and his passion for sharing his knowledge with others. He died in an avalanche while guiding in the San Juan Mountains. His legacy continues through his books and the climbers he mentored.
