47th Army

The 47th Army was a field army of the Soviet Union's Red Army during World War II and the early Cold War period. Formed in July 1941, it participated in several key campaigns on the Eastern Front.

World War II Service:

The 47th Army was initially formed in the Moscow Military District as part of the Soviet Union's rapid military expansion in the face of the German invasion. It initially participated in defensive operations during the Battle of Kiev. Later, it fought in the Crimean campaign, sustaining heavy losses.

The army was reformed and saw further action in the Caucasus region, participating in the Battle of the Caucasus. It played a role in halting the German advance and contributing to the eventual Soviet counteroffensive.

The 47th Army later fought in the liberation of Ukraine and participated in the Vistula-Oder Offensive, driving westward into Poland. One of its major contributions was during the Battle of Berlin, where it helped encircle and capture the German capital. Units of the 47th Army engaged in fierce urban combat during the final stages of the war.

Post-War Service:

Following the end of World War II, the 47th Army remained active in the Soviet occupation zone of Germany. It was disbanded at some point in the early Cold War period.

Commanders:

The 47th Army was commanded by several notable Soviet generals throughout its existence. Specific commanders and their periods of command are a matter of historical record and can be found in military archives and secondary sources on the Eastern Front.
