Cock Bridge (Aberdeenshire)

Cock Bridge is a small village in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, situated on the A939 road, approximately 22 miles (35 km) south of Tomintoul. It is notable for being one of the highest villages in Scotland.

The name "Cock Bridge" derives from the old bridge that crosses the River Gairn at this location. The term "cock" in Scots dialect can refer to a raised causeway or the capercaillie, a large woodland grouse. It is believed the name refers to an earlier timber bridge with a distinctive raised section.

The current bridge, a single-arched stone structure, was built in 1754 by Major Caulfield as part of the military road network constructed after the Jacobite rising of 1745. This road was designed to improve access to the Highlands and control the region.

Cock Bridge is also known for its weather station, which frequently records some of the lowest temperatures in the UK during winter. Its exposed location contributes to these extreme temperatures.
