Clinton Lake (Illinois)

Clinton Lake, also known as Clinton Reservoir, is a reservoir located in central Illinois, approximately 7 miles (11 km) east of Clinton, Illinois, in DeWitt County. The lake covers approximately 4,900 acres (20 km2) and has about 130 miles (210 km) of shoreline. It was created in the 1970s by impounding Salt Creek, a tributary of the Sangamon River, primarily to serve as a cooling source for the Clinton Nuclear Generating Station.

In addition to its primary role in providing cooling water, Clinton Lake is a popular recreational destination. Activities available include boating, fishing, swimming, camping, and hiking. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources manages the lake and surrounding Clinton Lake State Recreation Area.

The lake's fish population includes largemouth bass, crappie, channel catfish, bluegill, and walleye, making it a popular spot for anglers. Regulations regarding fishing licenses and catch limits are enforced by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

The Clinton Lake State Recreation Area provides numerous campgrounds, picnic areas, and hiking trails for visitors. The area also includes a beach for swimming and designated areas for hunting. The presence of the nuclear power plant necessitates certain security and environmental monitoring protocols within and around the lake.
