City of Maryborough (Victoria)
The City of Maryborough was a local government area in the state of Victoria, Australia. Located in the Loddon Campaspe region, it encompassed the town of Maryborough and surrounding rural areas. Established as a borough in 1857, it gained city status in 1961.
Historically, Maryborough was a significant gold mining centre during the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s. The City of Maryborough was responsible for providing local services such as roads, waste management, parks, and community facilities to its residents.
In 1994, the City of Maryborough was amalgamated with the Shire of Tullaroop and parts of the Shire of Bet Bet to form the Central Goldfields Shire. Consequently, the City of Maryborough as a distinct local government entity ceased to exist. The historical name and identity, however, remain strongly associated with the town of Maryborough itself. The former City of Maryborough council chambers are now part of the Central Goldfields Shire council offices.
