Cirrhinus

Cirrhinus is a genus of ray-finned fish in the family Cyprinidae. These freshwater fish are native to South Asia and Southeast Asia. They are commonly known as mrigal carp or white carp, although these common names can also refer specifically to Cirrhinus mrigala.

Cirrhinus species are characterized by their elongated bodies, relatively small heads, and silvery coloration. They are primarily bottom feeders, consuming detritus, algae, and small invertebrates. They are often found in rivers, ponds, and lakes.

Several species within the Cirrhinus genus are important in aquaculture. They are often cultured as a source of food in their native regions and are also used in integrated fish farming systems. They are generally considered to be fast-growing and relatively easy to raise in captivity.

Some species within the genus include:

  • Cirrhinus cirrhosus (White Catla)
  • Cirrhinus inornatus
  • Cirrhinus macrops
  • Cirrhinus mrigala (Mrigal carp)
  • Cirrhinus reba

The taxonomy of Cirrhinus has been revised several times, and some species previously classified within the genus have been moved to other genera. Further research continues to clarify the relationships among different Cirrhinus species and their relatives.
