Chumburu

Chumburu is a Guang language spoken primarily in Ghana, belonging to the Niger-Congo language family. Specifically, it falls within the Kwa branch. The language is spoken by the Chumburu people, whose traditional homeland is located in the north of the Volta Region and parts of the Northern Region of Ghana, near the Volta Lake.

Information regarding the precise number of Chumburu speakers varies. Sources generally classify the language as being of varying degrees of endangerment due to factors such as language shift towards more dominant languages like Twi and English.

Documentation and research on Chumburu are limited compared to other languages in Ghana. Linguistic research is ongoing to document its grammar, vocabulary, and cultural context. Efforts are also being made to promote the language and preserve its cultural heritage through literacy programs and mother-tongue education initiatives. The SIL International (Summer Institute of Linguistics) has done some work on the language.
