Central Province (Kenya)

Central Province was one of Kenya's eight provinces prior to the 2013 administrative reorganisation. It was located in the central highlands of the country, to the north of Nairobi. Its administrative capital was Nyeri.

History: The province's history is deeply intertwined with the colonial period and the subsequent struggle for independence. It was a region significantly affected by land alienation under British rule, contributing to the rise of the Mau Mau uprising. After Kenya's independence in 1963, Central Province remained a significant administrative region.

Geography: Central Province was characterized by diverse landscapes, including fertile farmlands, rolling hills, and portions of the Aberdare Range. The region is a vital agricultural area, benefiting from its rich volcanic soils and favorable climate.

People and Culture: The predominant ethnic group in Central Province was the Kikuyu. The Kikuyu language is widely spoken. The province is known for its rich cultural traditions, including music, dance, and traditional farming practices.

Economy: Agriculture formed the backbone of the Central Province's economy. Key crops included tea, coffee, maize, beans, potatoes, and horticultural products. The province also had a growing tourism sector, attracting visitors to its scenic landscapes and wildlife areas.

Administrative Divisions: Prior to 2013, Central Province was divided into several districts, including:

  • Kiambu District
  • Kirinyaga District
  • Murang'a District
  • Nyeri District
  • Nyandarua District

Post-2013: Following the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution of Kenya, the provincial administration system was abolished, and Kenya was divided into 47 counties. The territory that once constituted Central Province is now encompassed by the counties of:

  • Kiambu County
  • Kirinyaga County
  • Murang'a County
  • Nyeri County
  • Nyandarua County
