Cecil Brown (writer)

Cecil Brown (September 14, 1943 – March 25, 2024) was an American novelist, essayist, playwright, and professor. He was known for his works exploring themes of race, sexuality, and identity, often drawing on his own experiences as a Black man in America.

Brown earned a B.A. from North Carolina A&T University and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He held teaching positions at numerous universities, including the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Southern California.

His notable works include the novels The Life and Loves of Mr. Jiveass Nigger (1969), a controversial and groundbreaking exploration of black male identity; Stagolee (1971), which re-imagines the legendary black outlaw; and Days Without Weather (1983). He also authored the non-fiction book Coming Up Black: Patterns of Ghetto Social Behavior (1996).

Brown's writing often challenged societal norms and sparked debate. He was considered a significant voice in African American literature and a key figure in the Black Arts Movement. His work often employed experimental narrative techniques and a provocative, often satirical tone. He was the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships throughout his career.
