Catterns

Catterns, also historically spelled Catterntide, refers to the feast day of St. Catherine of Alexandria, traditionally celebrated on November 25th in England. It was particularly observed by lacemakers and other women involved in the textile trades, who considered St. Catherine their patron saint.

The celebration of Catterns often involved special customs and traditions. Many lace makers would take the day off work, sometimes engaging in revelry and feasting. Certain kinds of spiced cakes or breads, often associated with St. Catherine, were also prepared and consumed. Celebrations varied regionally, but the general theme involved honoring St. Catherine and enjoying a respite from labor. The observance of Catterns has largely faded in modern times, although historical accounts and references remain. It is sometimes conflated with or similar to celebrations of other textile-related saints or holidays.
