Calypso (camera)

Calypso was a 35mm underwater camera designed by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and manufactured by Atoms, a French company, beginning in 1960. Later versions were produced by Nikon and branded as the Nikonos.

The Calypso was revolutionary in its time, being one of the first purpose-built cameras specifically designed for underwater photography. It featured a robust, waterproof design eliminating the need for bulky external housings. The camera was constructed with O-ring seals to keep water out and could be safely used at considerable depths.

Key features of the Calypso included its bright viewfinder, simple controls, and a range of interchangeable lenses designed for underwater use. Its modular design allowed for relatively easy repair and maintenance, further contributing to its popularity among divers and underwater photographers. The lens mount system was unique and not compatible with other camera systems.

Though production of the Calypso camera under the Calypso name ceased, the design formed the basis for the hugely successful Nikonos line of underwater cameras, solidifying Cousteau’s vision and contributing significantly to the development of underwater photography as both a scientific tool and an art form. The Nikonos cameras, direct descendants of the Calypso, continued to be popular for decades and are still sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.
