Jim Unger
Jim Unger (1937-2012) was a British-Canadian cartoonist, best known as the creator of the syndicated comic panel Herman.
Herman, which Unger began drawing in 1974, featured single-panel gags depicting humorous and often absurd situations involving everyday people. The humor was typically observational and relatable, focusing on family life, work, and social interactions. Unger's style was distinctive, employing a simple but expressive cartooning style. The characters were often drawn with exaggerated features and emphasized expressions.
Herman achieved considerable popularity, appearing in hundreds of newspapers worldwide. It spawned several books and merchandise. Unger retired from drawing the daily comic in 1992, but continued to produce Sunday panels until 1997.
After his retirement from Herman, Unger occasionally contributed cartoons to other publications. He resided in British Columbia, Canada, until his death in 2012. His work continues to be appreciated for its lighthearted humor and accessible style.
