Typhoon Irving (1982)

Typhoon Irving was a significant tropical cyclone that impacted Japan in September 1982. It formed in the Western Pacific Ocean and followed a generally northward track. While not the strongest typhoon of the season, Irving was notable for its considerable rainfall and subsequent flooding across several regions of Japan.

Irving caused widespread disruption, including transportation delays and power outages. Numerous landslides were triggered by the heavy rainfall, leading to significant property damage and unfortunately, loss of life. Agricultural areas were also severely impacted, with crops destroyed by the floodwaters.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) closely monitored Typhoon Irving's progress and issued timely warnings to the public. Emergency services were deployed to assist affected communities, providing rescue and relief efforts. Post-storm assessments focused on infrastructure repair and support for those displaced by the typhoon. While a comprehensive death toll figure is difficult to ascertain precisely, the impact of Typhoon Irving was substantial, highlighting the vulnerability of Japan to tropical cyclones.
