Cook's (department store)
Cook's was a regional department store chain primarily located in Memphis, Tennessee and the surrounding Mid-South region of the United States. Founded in 1910 by George Cook, the store initially focused on dry goods and apparel. Over time, Cook's expanded its merchandise offerings to include furniture, appliances, home decor, and other goods typically found in full-line department stores.
Cook's was known for its customer service and its commitment to the local community. The store often hosted events and promotions, and it was a popular shopping destination for families in the Memphis area. At its peak, Cook's operated multiple locations throughout the region, including a flagship store in downtown Memphis.
Competition from national department store chains and changing consumer shopping habits led to a decline in Cook's business in the late 20th century. The company ultimately closed its doors in the late 1990s. While no longer in operation, Cook's remains a fondly remembered institution for many residents of the Mid-South, representing a bygone era of local retail.
