Calypso (TV series)
Calypso was a British travel documentary television series that aired on BBC Two from 1983 to 1988. It was presented by explorer and botanist David Bellamy.
The series followed Bellamy as he traveled to various locations around the world, focusing on the natural history and ecology of each place. He covered a wide range of topics, from coral reefs and rainforests to deserts and mountains. Known for his enthusiastic and distinctive presentation style, Bellamy sought to educate viewers about environmental issues and promote conservation.
Each episode typically featured Bellamy exploring the local flora and fauna, interviewing local people, and discussing the challenges facing the environment in that particular region. The series was notable for its beautiful cinematography and Bellamy's engaging and informative commentary.
While Calypso was popular and considered influential in raising environmental awareness, it has also been subject to some retrospective criticism regarding Bellamy's later views on climate change, which diverged significantly from mainstream scientific consensus. Despite this, the series remains a notable example of early environmental documentary television.
