Cairo Declaration (film)
Cairo Declaration is a 2015 Chinese historical war film directed by Wen Jiang. The film depicts the 1943 Cairo Conference and subsequent Cairo Declaration, focusing on the political and diplomatic maneuvers leading to the agreement by the Allied powers (United States, United Kingdom, and China) to demand the unconditional surrender of Japan and the restoration of territories occupied by Japan, including Taiwan and the Penghu Islands, to the Republic of China.
The film faced criticism for its historical inaccuracies and perceived pro-Chinese nationalist slant. It sparked controversy, particularly in Taiwan, due to the poster's prominent featuring of Mao Zedong, whose Communist forces had not participated in the Cairo Conference or the wartime government of China. The film also attracted criticism for its portrayal of the roles and contributions of various historical figures and nations involved in World War II. The casting choices and narrative presentation were seen by some as downplaying the contributions of the United States and the United Kingdom, while overemphasizing the role of China under Chiang Kai-shek and suggesting a significant role for Mao Zedong, who was not present at the conference.
The film was released in China in September 2015 to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.
