Mama (American TV series)

Mama was a popular American television series that aired on CBS from 1949 to 1957. It was based on the play and subsequent film I Remember Mama, which in turn were inspired by the Kathryn Forbes novel Mama's Bank Account.

The series centered on a Norwegian immigrant family, the Hansens, living in San Francisco in the early 20th century. The show depicted the warmth, strength, and resilience of the family matriarch, Marta Hansen, affectionately known as "Mama," and her interactions with her husband, Lars, and their children, Katrin, Nels, Dagmar, and Christine.

Peggy Wood played the role of Mama throughout the series' run. Other prominent cast members included Judson Laire as Papa, Rosemary Rice as Katrin, and Dick Van Patten (initially) as Nels.

Mama was known for its sentimental and nostalgic portrayal of family life and the challenges faced by immigrant families in America. The show often explored themes of perseverance, love, and the importance of community. While initially broadcast live, Mama transitioned to filmed episodes in later seasons. Reruns of the show continued to be shown for several years after its original run ended.
