Scales (film)

Scales, also known as Sayidat al bahr (Arabic: سيّدة البحر), is a 2019 Saudi Arabian drama film directed by Shahad Ameen. The film is a fantastical feminist fable set in a patriarchal fishing village governed by superstition.

The story revolves around Hayat, a young girl who is considered cursed by her village because she does not drown after birth. In this village, tradition dictates that families must sacrifice female children to the sea creatures to ensure good fishing. Hayat defies this tradition and struggles for survival while challenging the deeply ingrained societal norms.

Scales explores themes of gender inequality, tradition versus modernity, and the power of individual agency. It uses magical realism to critique patriarchal structures and the exploitation of women. The film garnered critical acclaim for its unique narrative, visual style, and its bold commentary on societal issues in Saudi Arabia.
