Cadillacs and Dinosaurs (role-playing game)
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs is a role-playing game based on the comic book series Xenozoic Tales by Mark Schultz, later adapted into an animated television show called Cadillacs and Dinosaurs. The game was originally published by TSR, Inc. in 1993, using the Marvel Super Heroes (MSH) role-playing system, specifically the Advanced Set rules, also known as the FASERIP system.
The game's setting is a post-apocalyptic Earth in the 26th century, where humanity has returned after a cataclysm that triggered the re-emergence of dinosaurs. Resources are scarce, and the world is dangerous, with both dinosaurs and criminal human factions posing threats. Player characters typically take on the roles of mechanics, mercenaries, and adventurers trying to survive and make a difference in this harsh environment.
Gameplay involves using the FASERIP system to resolve actions and conflicts. Character abilities are rated on a scale of Fantastic, Amazing, Remarkable, Incredible, Excellent, Good, Typical, Poor, and Shift (levels 0-4), and these ratings, along with applicable modifiers, determine success probabilities on a universal chart. The game emphasizes action and adventure, reflecting the tone of the source material.
The rulebook contains information on the setting, character creation, rules for combat and other situations, and adventure scenarios. A key element of the game is the use of classic cars, often modified for survival and combat in the dinosaur-infested landscape, hence the "Cadillacs" in the title. Dinosaurs are detailed extensively, including their statistics and behaviors, making them a formidable and often unpredictable element in gameplay. The game aimed to capture the pulpy adventure and retro-futuristic aesthetic of Xenozoic Tales.
