Bye Bye Blackbird (Keith Jarrett album)
Bye Bye Blackbird is a studio album by American jazz pianist Keith Jarrett, released in 1991 on the ECM label. The album features Jarrett on piano, Gary Peacock on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums; this trio is often referred to as Jarrett's "Standards Trio".
The album is a departure from some of Jarrett's more well-known solo piano works or extended improvisations. Bye Bye Blackbird primarily consists of interpretations of jazz standards, including the title track, "Bye Bye Blackbird," a popular song written by Mort Dixon and Ray Henderson. Other tracks include standards such as "You Go to My Head," "I Thought About You," "Butch and Butch," "For Heaven's Sake," "I Loves You Porgy," and "Just in Time."
The album is notable for its accessibility and strong melodic focus, offering a more straightforward and lyrical approach compared to some of Jarrett's other explorations. Bye Bye Blackbird was well-received by critics and audiences alike, further solidifying the reputation of the Standards Trio as one of the premier jazz ensembles of its time. It showcases the trio's interplay, deep understanding of jazz repertoire, and ability to bring fresh interpretations to familiar melodies.
