The Mare

A mare is an adult female horse or other equine animal. To be classified as a mare, the animal must be four years of age or older, though in some contexts, particularly in racing, the age threshold may be lower. Prior to reaching adulthood, female horses are called fillies.

Mares are typically larger and heavier than male horses (stallions) of the same breed, although this difference can vary. They possess a distinct set of physical characteristics, including a broader pelvis to accommodate foaling.

The term "mare" also refers to the reproductive status of the female horse. Mares are capable of becoming pregnant and giving birth to foals. Their reproductive cycle, known as estrus or "heat," occurs periodically throughout the spring and summer months. During estrus, mares exhibit behaviors that attract stallions, indicating their readiness to mate. The gestation period for a mare is approximately 11 months.

Mares are used for a variety of purposes, including riding, driving, breeding, and showing. Their temperament can vary widely depending on breed, training, and individual personality. Some mares are known for their gentle nature, while others can be more spirited. A well-trained mare is a valuable asset in many equestrian disciplines.
