Bottoms Reservoir (Derbyshire)

Bottoms Reservoir is a man-made lake located in the Longdendale Valley in Derbyshire, England. It is one of a series of reservoirs built in the valley to supply drinking water to the Greater Manchester area. Constructed in the 1870s, Bottoms Reservoir lies between Valehouse Reservoir to the west and Torside Reservoir to the east.

The reservoir is owned and operated by United Utilities. It is primarily a water storage facility, collecting water from the surrounding Pennine hills. This water is then fed downstream to treatment works before being distributed to consumers.

Bottoms Reservoir, like the other reservoirs in Longdendale, significantly altered the landscape of the valley. Prior to its construction, the area was primarily agricultural. The reservoir provides a habitat for various species of wildlife, although its primary function remains water supply. Fishing is often permitted on the reservoir under license, subject to relevant regulations. The reservoir and surrounding area are used for recreational activities, including walking and cycling, although access to the immediate shoreline may be restricted.
