Bill Cunningham (journalist)

William John "Bill" Cunningham Jr. (March 13, 1929 – June 25, 2016) was an American fashion photographer and street style chronicler for The New York Times. He was known for his candid and democratic approach to photographing fashion, focusing on everyday people and their unique styles on the streets of New York City, rather than celebrities or models.

Cunningham's long-running columns, "On the Street" and "Evening Hours," showcased his photographs and brief observations on fashion trends. He was a fixture in New York City, instantly recognizable on his bicycle, clad in his signature blue work jacket. He rarely accepted gifts or meals from the fashion industry, preferring to maintain an objective and independent perspective.

Before becoming a photographer, Cunningham worked as a milliner, creating hats under the label "William J." He was also a window dresser for Bonwit Teller before serving in the U.S. Army. His career at The New York Times began in 1978.

Cunningham's work was celebrated for its insightful commentary on fashion as a reflection of society and culture. He was seen as a pioneer in the field of street style photography and a beloved figure in the fashion world. He received numerous awards and honors, including the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Award in 1983 and a French Legion of Honor in 2008. A documentary about his life, Bill Cunningham New York, was released in 2010. His legacy continues to inspire fashion photographers and enthusiasts around the world.
