Belle Isle (Windermere)

Belle Isle is the largest of the nineteen islands located on Windermere, a lake in the Lake District of England. Situated near the town of Bowness-on-Windermere, the island has a rich history, having been inhabited since at least Roman times. Originally known as Lang Holme, the island was renamed Belle Isle in 1781 by Isabella Curwen, who purchased it and built a distinctive round house on its summit.

The round house, sometimes referred to as a rotunda or a belvedere, is a prominent feature of the island, built in the Palladian style. It served as the Curwen family's summer residence. The island also boasts landscaped gardens and woodlands, contributing to its scenic beauty.

Belle Isle has passed through various ownerships throughout its history. In the late 19th century, it was owned by Henry Walter Schneider, an industrialist and railway magnate. Today, Belle Isle is privately owned. While public access may be limited, the island can be viewed from the surrounding lake and offers a unique glimpse into the history and landscape of Windermere.
