SunPass
SunPass is an electronic toll collection system used throughout the state of Florida, USA. It allows drivers to pay tolls without stopping at toll booths by using a small electronic transponder, often called a "SunPass transponder," attached to the vehicle's windshield. When a vehicle equipped with a SunPass passes through a toll plaza, the transponder communicates with overhead sensors, which automatically deduct the toll amount from the driver's prepaid account.
SunPass is administered by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). It is widely used on Florida's toll roads, expressways, and bridges. The system aims to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion by enabling faster toll collection.
There are typically two types of SunPass transponders: a portable, battery-operated transponder and a sticker transponder. The portable transponder can be moved between vehicles, while the sticker transponder is permanently affixed to a single vehicle. Both types of transponders are linked to a prepaid account that users can replenish online, by phone, or at designated retail locations.
SunPass is interoperable with other electronic toll collection systems in the United States, including E-ZPass and Peach Pass. This interoperability allows drivers to use their SunPass transponder on toll roads in other states that participate in these programs.
Using SunPass generally offers drivers a discount on toll rates compared to paying with cash at toll booths. It also eliminates the need to carry cash and provides a more convenient and efficient method of toll payment.
