Austevoll

Austevoll is a municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Sunnhordland. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Storebø. Austevoll is an archipelago consisting of numerous islands and islets, situated south of Bergen.

Geography:

Austevoll consists of 667 islands, islets, and skerries. The largest islands include Huftarøy, Selbjørn, Stolmen, and Hundvåkøy. The landscape is characterized by rocky coastlines, heather moors, and some small areas of forest.

History:

The name Austevoll comes from the Old Norse word Austrvǫllr, meaning "eastern field" or "eastern plain." The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Fishing and agriculture have historically been the main industries. Austevoll became a municipality in 1838.

Fishing and aquaculture are the dominant industries in Austevoll. Shipping and related services are also important sectors. The municipality is home to several companies involved in the seafood industry.
