August Jürima (Estonian politician, 1902–1947)

August Jürima (born August Jürmann, 10 December 1902 in Vana-Vändra Parish, Pärnu County – 19 August 1947 in Norilsk, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia) was an Estonian politician and agronomist. He served as Minister of Agriculture in the Estonian Provisional Government in 1940 and in the government-in-exile from 1944 to 1945.

Jürima graduated from the University of Tartu with a degree in agronomy. He was actively involved in agricultural organizations before World War II. Following the Soviet occupation of Estonia in 1940, he was briefly appointed as Minister of Agriculture in Johannes Vares' puppet government, a position he likely accepted under duress given his subsequent anti-Soviet activities.

With the German occupation in 1941, Jürima became involved in the Estonian resistance movement. As the Soviet army advanced in 1944, he joined the government-in-exile headed by Otto Tief, again serving as Minister of Agriculture. After the Soviet re-occupation, he remained in Estonia and was eventually arrested by the Soviet authorities.

Jürima was deported to a forced labor camp in Norilsk, Siberia, where he died in 1947. His association with both the Soviet puppet government and the Estonian resistance reflects the complex and tragic circumstances faced by Estonians during World War II and the subsequent Soviet occupation.
