Athy (Parliament of Ireland constituency)
Athy was a parliamentary constituency representing the town of Athy in County Kildare in the Parliament of Ireland. It existed from 1613 to 1800.
Prior to 1613, County Kildare elected two members to Parliament. The borough of Athy was enfranchised in 1613 and allowed to elect two members independently. The constituency was disenfranchised by the Act of Union 1800, which unified the Parliament of Ireland with the Parliament of Great Britain to form the Parliament of the United Kingdom. As a result, Athy was no longer a separate constituency and County Kildare's representation was adjusted.
The electorate generally consisted of freemen of the borough.
Notable representatives for Athy included:
- Sir Robert Kennedy (various periods)
- John Wakeley (1661)
- Maurice Keatinge (various periods)
- Thomas Burgh (1692-1693) - Surveyor General of Ireland
The constituency boundaries were defined by the borough limits of Athy.
