Arkadag

Arkadag is a title officially bestowed upon Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, the former President of Turkmenistan, and also refers to the city built in his honor.

Etymology and Meaning: "Arkadag" translates roughly to "Protector" or "Hero" in Turkmen. It is a symbolic title signifying Berdimuhamedow's perceived role as a guardian and leader of the nation.

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow as Arkadag: Following his resignation as President and the election of his son, Serdar Berdimuhamedow, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow retained considerable political influence and was formally designated as the "National Leader of the Turkmen People" and also continued to be referred to as Arkadag. This formalization solidified his ongoing role in Turkmen politics.

Arkadag City: In 2023, a new, technologically advanced city was inaugurated near Ashgabat and named Arkadag. This city serves as a testament to the legacy of Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow. It is planned to be a "smart city" incorporating sustainable technologies and innovative urban planning. The construction and development of Arkadag city are considered major national projects in Turkmenistan.
