Aqualad
Aqualad is a name used by multiple fictional characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Primarily associated with the Aquaman franchise, the Aqualad mantle signifies a young Atlantean or metahuman with aquatic abilities, often serving as a sidekick or junior member of a superhero team.
Garth (Original Aqualad)
The first Aqualad, Garth, debuted in Adventure Comics #269 (February 1960). He is an Atlantean prince who was exiled from Atlantis due to ancient superstitious beliefs. Taken in by Aquaman, Garth became his partner and adopted the name Aqualad. He was a founding member of the Teen Titans. Garth eventually matured, adopting the new codename Tempest and developing more potent mystical abilities.
Kaldur'ahm (Second Aqualad/Aqualman)
Kaldur'ahm, also known as Jackson Hyde, first appeared in Brightest Day #4 (August 2010). This version of Aqualad is the son of Black Manta, Aquaman's nemesis. He is a metahuman with the ability to create hard water constructs and manipulate water. Initially unaware of his lineage, Kaldur'ahm was recruited by Aquaman. He later adopted the name Aquaman, briefly, before Aquaman's return. His powers and origin story have been reinterpreted in various media, including the Young Justice animated series, where he plays a prominent role.
Role and Abilities
Regardless of the character bearing the name, Aqualad typically possesses abilities similar to Aquaman, including super strength, enhanced durability, the ability to breathe underwater, and telepathic communication with marine life. Some versions, like Kaldur'ahm, possess additional powers, such as hydrokinesis and the ability to generate electricity. Aqualad often serves as a bridge between the surface world and the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, acting as a representative and protector of both. The character represents a younger generation of aquatic heroes, grappling with issues of identity, heritage, and responsibility.
