Smith was born in 1843. Prior to enlisting, his occupation was listed as a barber. He enlisted in Company H of the 55th Massachusetts Infantry, one of the African-American regiments formed during the war.

At the Battle of Honey Hill, Smith distinguished himself by bravely rescuing the regimental colors after the color bearer was shot down. Under heavy enemy fire, Smith retrieved the flag and carried it forward, encouraging his fellow soldiers. His actions were credited with helping to rally the regiment and maintain its position during the engagement.

Smith was awarded the Medal of Honor on July 6, 1865, for his gallantry. His citation reads: "At the battle of Honey Hill, S.C., 30 November 1864, this soldier, then a Sergeant in Company H, 55th Massachusetts Infantry, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry; when his color bearer was shot down, this soldier immediately seized the colors and carried them forward, thus encouraging the men to advance."

After the war, Smith returned to civilian life and worked as a laborer. He died in 1932 and is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Rhode Island. His Medal of Honor stands as a testament to his courage and dedication during the Civil War.
