Amblypygi

Amblypygi are an order of arachnids commonly known as whip spiders or tailless whip scorpions. They are characterized by their flattened bodies, long, whip-like first pair of legs (used as sensory organs), and large, spined pedipalps (used for prey capture). Amblypygids are found in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

Description:

Amblypygids possess a segmented abdomen that lacks a tail. The prosoma (cephalothorax) is broad and flattened. The most distinctive feature is the first pair of legs, which are elongated and multi-segmented, acting as antennae to sense their surroundings. They are extremely delicate and not used for walking. The second pair of legs are typically used for walking, while the third and fourth pairs are also used for locomotion. Their pedipalps are often robust and armed with spines, used for grasping and crushing prey.

Habitat and Distribution:

Amblypygids are typically found in humid environments, such as rainforests, caves, and under rocks and logs. They have a global distribution in tropical and subtropical regions.

Behavior and Ecology:

Amblypygids are primarily nocturnal predators. They are relatively slow-moving and rely on their sensory legs to detect prey. They typically feed on insects and other small invertebrates. They are generally shy and non-aggressive towards humans.

Conservation Status:
