Alausí
Alausí is a town located in the Chimborazo Province of Ecuador. It is the capital of the Alausí Canton. Situated in the Andean highlands, Alausí is known for its historical significance and the iconic Nariz del Diablo (Devil's Nose) railway.
Historically, Alausí was an important administrative and trade center during the colonial era. The town's architecture reflects this history, with many well-preserved buildings dating back to that period.
The Nariz del Diablo is a particularly notable feature associated with Alausí. This section of railway, considered an engineering marvel, involved a steep descent down a near-vertical cliff face. Tourists often visit Alausí to experience this unique train ride (although rail service interruptions have occurred at various times).
The economy of Alausí is primarily based on agriculture, tourism, and small-scale commerce. The surrounding area is characterized by traditional farming practices. The town also serves as a regional hub for nearby rural communities.
Alausí experiences a temperate Andean climate, with cooler temperatures at higher elevations. The town is accessible by road and is a popular stop for travelers exploring the Ecuadorian Andes.
